Tom Belbin

The Tom Belbin Trio

“Tom is an exciting Jazz Saxophonist from Portsmouth, holding over 17 years of performance experience. He is a First-Class graduate from The University of Chichester, and has played at hundreds of venues all over the UK. Included are the prestigious events Cheltenham Jazz Festival, West Dean Chilli Fiesta and The Royal Festival Hall. Tom’s influences vary from contemporary jazz fusion players Kenny Garrett and Gerald Albright, to jazz bebop greats Charlie Parker and Cannonball Aderley. He has performed in many bands, frequently crossing between genres, including funk, jazz, pop, blues and swing. Also, Tom performs regularly across the south coast as a vastly experienced jazz pianist.

Head of Jazz studies at The University of Chichester, Nick Reynolds describes Tom as ‘a talented and versatile saxophone player with a great future ahead of him. His impressive technique is matched by a mature sense of musicianship and he has a comprehensive understanding of how to fluently negotiate a broad range of repertoire. Tom’s outlook is highly professional and he is sensitive to the requirements of the different settings he performs in.’

Ian Mayes

Ian is an experienced guitarist and bassist from London, who is fast approaching 20 of years playing. Growing up Ian played with numerous bands, and often played on the open mic night scene around South London, cutting his performance skills in the competitive environment from an early age. At 22 Ian went to New Zealand to teach instrumental lessons. He joined a local New Zealand band and gigged regularly across the South Island, performing the bands original material. Ian came back to the U.K to study the jazz course at Chichester University where Ian met Richard and Tom.

At the time, Ian was playing guitar with a jazz trio called Daley and the Cat. Daley and the Cat held numerous residencies around Chichester, played weekly at functions and private parties, and performed on main stage festivals across the South Coast, including Arundel Festival, Priory Park, Chilli Fiesta and more.

West Sussex Jazz

With the lead singer of Daley and the Cat returning to her home town, Daley and the Cat disbanded, leaving Ian looking for a new performance opportunity. Ian became the bassist for the Tom Belbin Trio, completing the line up with Tom on sax and Richard on drums. Ian works hard to bring his own personal style to his playing, whilst being sensitive to the bands requirements.

Richard Carter

For the last 12 years Richard has been performing in many different bands, covering most styles of music; including Jazz, Pop, Rock, Metal, Fusion, Soul, Funk, World Music, Hip Hop, Classical, Experimental, Electronic, Function and more. His wide range of styles have seen him play with some of the south coasts top musicians, and tour the country with his band Core of IO. His wide range of styles bring a deeper level of understanding and knowledge to his jazz drumming, allowing him to replicate the great recognisable sounds of swing jazz eras with ease. Often requested for sets by musicians all over the south coast, Richard is fast becoming one of the most recognisable faces on the local music scene, and takes his craft seriously with his professional and reliable attitude. Richard has a degree from the University of Chichester with a 1st class dissertation specializing in Jazz. This is where he met Tom and Ian, and joined The Tom Belbin Trio as way of pursuing his dream as a jazz drummer, and allowing him to focus on the style he loves. Playing to thousands of people and touring up and down the country at festivals and in clubs, Rich’s experience has grown to be vast. Rich has also recorded in top London Studios (Pinewood, Metropolis) with many different producers and audio engineers.
